As disorienting as it is to observe the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched over the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we learned about into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of animosity who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades instead of months, however it is still disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

The apparent and straightforward reality that the Jesus from scripture calls for a form of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: attractive to the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Highest of Us
So I have been heartened to observe the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided great solace to help build the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags during all protests and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by reference to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it unique and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In both situations does it mean acting as if the worst about the nation and Christianity did not happen; it means both meekness and conviction, a mixture that committed national faithful ought to accept.
