In excess of 20 Olympic champions, coaches and further world-class competitors have signed a statement urging a halt to the death penalty of a boxing champion and instructor, who is on death row in Iran.

Growing Global Anger

During increasing worldwide anger over the nation's increasing application of executions as a tool of repression, the powerfully expressed appeal condemns the authorities's ruling to maintain the capital punishment of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

Vafaei Sani, three decades old, from Mashhad in the northern province, was arrested for taking part in nationwide protests in the year 2019 and accused of supporting an dissident organization. He has endured 60 months in detention, where he has been tortured and kept in seclusion.

“Competition is designed to inspire faith, unity, and fortitude,” the supporters wrote. “The death penalty of a winner for his beliefs is a clear violation on these values and a warning to every athlete who attempts to speak out.

History of Killing Sports Figures

The appeal said that Vafaei Sani’s case was part of a pattern and highlighted the country's record of putting to death athletes for their beliefs, including a national team leader, leader of the national football team, and a volleyball captain, captain of the female volleyball side. In 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year-old national sports titleholder, was put to death.

Additional signatories to the statement include a sailing champion, who skippered the pioneering female-only team in a round-the-world competition and was the pioneering lady to receive a prestigious nautical honor; the former captain of the national squad an athlete; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the Iranian squad for the international competition.

Apprehension and Unfair Trial

The boxer was arrested in early 2020. The charges against him comprised “causing deterioration on Earth through incendiarism and damage of government belongings”. His ruling has been overturned on two occasions but on 4 October it was maintained on the latest review. His legal proceedings was denounced as “deeply biased” by rights defenders and groups.

Appeal to UN

The appeal to stop the boxer's execution comes after a previous letter to the global human rights chief for human rights, backed by in excess of a hundred rights specialists and groups, urging action to prevent the sports figure's death.

Capital Punishment Escalation

Based on findings, there is an “death penalty surge in the country, which has reached shocking dimensions”. In 2023, the government put to death at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a nearly half increase on the previous year. In the prior period, data showed 972 deaths, constituting the highest number since 2015. More than eight hundred people have been sentenced so far in 2025.

Dissidents and protesters are victims, notably in the aftermath of the 2022's demonstrations. Specialists say the regime have used the executions to suppress opposition, instil apprehension among the citizenry and tighten their grip on authority.
